Understanding each other

life coaching, colouryourdream, life, purpose, marriage

Lately I read a little book about marriage. I saw so many different couples in my life and thought a lot about this topic. It is so sad, that so many marriages fail and the question is why?

I thank God that I grew up in a very stable family environment, with loving parents and sisters. In my surrounding I never really experienced marriage breakups, this was quite foreign for me. Nowadays it is so sad to see so many couples break up.

So I thought I write in the next posts about a book from a Swiss physician (Paul Tournier), who made a significant contribution to understanding of psychiatry and its relation to the Christian faith.

On the spine of his book: „To understand each other. Classic wisdom on marriage“, Paul Tournier  you can read the following:

He writes that the „major problem is „to understand each other.“ He says: „When we talk of marriage counseling we think immideately of the extreme cases, of threats to seek divorce, of couples in violent disputes who frequently come to blows.“ But there are many other couples whose marriages are no less a failure. „They live side by side, without hurting one another, but poles apart, because of no real understanding of one another.“ Courship’s complete frankness has given way to superficial exchanges of information. The husband and wife fail to realize that they are hiding part of their real feelings from each other.

Paul Tournier says, that he sees many couple and „behind their difficulties I always discover a lack of mutual openness, a loyal and total openness to one another without which there can be no real understanding.“ And the ability to understand each other is what counts in working out marital happiness together. In his book: „To understand each other – classic wisdom on marriage“ he suggests ways to achieve this understanding.“

My next post will contain excerpts of his book.

??? What did you experience with this topic so far???

Are you right-brained or left-brained?

Colouryourdream Purpose Goal Dream Right-brain left-brain

According to a personality test I did not long ago, I am more right-brained than left brained. What does this mean?

Right brain:

Focus is on images
Focus in on perception
Focus is on intuition&abstract thinking
Tends to be more creative and emotional
Likes to see the big picture from start to finish
Street smart

Some people are more left-brained. What does this mean?
Left brain:

Focus is on words
Focus is on reality
Focus is on logic & concrete thinking
Tends to be more analytical & literal
Comfortable working a piece of the process
Book smart
I can clearly see that I am more right-brained, because when I read through this characteristics above I can see myself.

The focus with right-brained people is for example on images. What kind of books do I buy? I like books which have a nice “outfit” – a nice type of font, colors and pictures/ cartoons/ illustrations rather than just plain writing without pictures.
I love when somebody sends me an ecard – cause it’s a picture with words.
When I send emails, I love to add “faces” which show emotions =)

I also tend to be more creative and emotional. This drives some left-brained people crazy: being too emotional. And I guess in some cases they are right =).
The question is: Am I controlled by my feelings or not?

I guess more women have this kind of “problem” sometimes, that they let their feelings control them. But it’s possible to “manage our emotions rather than allowing them to manage us.”
“If we have to wait to see how we feel before we know if we can enjoy the day, then we are giving feelings control over us. But thankfully we have free will and can make decisions that are not based on feelings.”

I think that everybody can think of examples in their lives, where the feelings took over and we did the wrong thing. Maybe somebody has treated you unfairly or hurt your feelings and you decide to shut them out of your life. It’s your choice what you do: you can pray for this person and forgive or you can act according to your feelings and “forfeit peace and joy.”
When I think of myself I guess sometimes there is a lot of pride involved, because I want to give in to my feelings, because I am so hurt. But I know that this is not the best way, because our feelings can “make us miserable and drive us to make choices we eventually regret.”

So it is my choice whether I let my feelings control me or not.
They say that “emotions are the Christian’s number one enemy because they can easily prevent us from following the will of God.”

This morning I was a bit emotional and my feelings wanted to take over. But: I chose not to let this happen! And it worked =)

I was a bit sad and not motivated today when I woke up, because after my long journey I waited now more than 3 days for my suitcase to arrive. I was pretty relaxed about it the last 3 days, but today I started to worry. But then I took action to find out what the problem was and I manged to control my feelings! I prayed, did some telephone calls and started to read a book about feelings =)
So this is why I came up with this post today!

It’s possible to control your feelings and not let them ruin your day!
??? Are you right-brained or left-brained???

??? Did you experience something, where your feelings controlled you or where you managed not letting your feelings control you???

God answers prayer

colouryourdream purpose goal dream prayer photography flowers

Today I had such a wonderful experience that I am overwhelmed. I experienced it so many times, that God answered my prayers. Not always right away, but he answered it. But today he answered it right away on the SAME day!

There was a big problem in the morning and I thought: How am I going to do this? How can this be solved? I was so sad but thought: God helped me so many times with this special situation and he can do it again. So I trust in HIM!

Today in the evening God already answered the prayer! And this bible verse came into my mind from Isaiah 65,24: “Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.”
And I thought: wow – That’s what God did today!
And before I went to bed today I read my daily devotion. And in my little booklet there was a verse written – I could not believe which one it was! It was just the one I mentioned above, the verse which came to my mind a few hours before from Isaiah 65,24: “Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.”

Thank you so much Lord for answering my prayer!

Blessed new year 2013!

Colouryourdream Purpose Dream Goal

Tomorrow is the last day of the year 2012 (or today – depending when you read this post or depending where you live =)

I can’t believe that this year is almost over again – it went by so fast.
It was a blessed year with lots of joy but also sadness.

When we went to the funeral of my auntie this week, I thought: I don’t know what people do who have no hope, who don’t know what comes after death?
In general funerals are very sad, because a person who we loved or know is not here on earth with us anymore.
But if you believe that there is life after death – a better life – it’s not that sad anymore. If a person loved God and commited his/her life to him on earth God promises a beautiful life with him when we die – our life finished on earth, but it will go on forever at a beautiful place :

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (Bible, John 11,25)

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3,16+17)

“There will be “no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelations 21,4)

I really love these bible verses – because it gives me so much hope and peace.
I also know that my aunt believed this and that she commited her life to the one who is the way, the truth and the life! (written in John 14,6).

The day she died there was a bible verse written in a book which many christians around the world read on a daily basis (with verses from the bible) – it’s called: “Losungen” in German (it’s a devotional guide for every day).
On the day she died there was this following verse written: from Isaiah 60,19+20

“The sun will no more be your light by day,
nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
Your sun will never set again,
and your moon will wane no more;
the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sorrow will end.”

What a beautiful verse!

I wish you God’s blessing for the new year 2013!

I don’t know how you feel about the next coming year: maybe you are happy, maybe you have sorrows, maybe you are sad, maybe you are desperate, maybe you are fearful, maybe you are hopeful?

My prayer is that you find/ experience the most important: peace with God.
