What is most important in life for you?

What is most important in life for you?

If you would list your 5 most important values – which one would you write down? One of my values is for example: “Making a difference in people’s lives” and in my life coaching profession I ask myself this question: “How can I make a difference in women’s lives?” Often I feel overwhelmed and I don’t think that I can make a huge difference in people’s lives. But I read once that if I relieve the suffering of one person today I am making a difference. That means, I don’t need to think: “How can I help the whole world” – this is too overwhelming, but I can think: “How can I make a person happy today, how can I help someone in some way today?”

What do people suffer from? Of course there are a lot of people suffering from serious things and they require some professional help from a counsellor. But I am not talking about this here. I am now talking more about some “pain” you are facing each day on a “value level” – you are aware that you need some change in a few areas of your life, but you don’t know where to start or how to do it. Or you are not fulfilled in your life, you are not passionate about your job or you don’t know what your purpose in life is – in general and specific for you and your unique gifts.

These are just a few “pain points” you might have. The question is: how do you get help? From whom? How do you move forward in answering these questions? Have you given up answering these questions already or do you have fear facing them or are you afraid of change? What stops you from facing the important questions in life?

Whatever it might be: Take action today! How? You could ask a friend or family member to help you or you could look for a coach who will help you by asking the right questions to bring out in you the answers you already have inside yourself. The most important thing is: take action today. And remember: just take one action step at a time.

??? What action could you take this week to find answers to your questions???

??? What are your 5 core values??? How do you live them out every single day???

What’s imortant for 2016

colouryourdream, purpose, life, 2016,vision

Every year at the end of the year or at the beginning of the new year I write what’s important for me in the coming year. So this year I wrote on the 1. January 2016 what I want to remember in 2016, e.g. my top values, some quotes and overall what’s my life’s purpose and how I want to live out my gifts God has blessed me with. It is very challenging but good to reflect and to ponder about questions like: Why do I do things? What for? For whom? What is the purpose?

I realize that I am very different to some people. I think a lot about how I can live a purposeful life, what “counts” in the end – not superficially here in this life, but in eternity. I believe that life on this earth is so short in comparison to eternity. So I want to make sure that I live a purposeful life and not a life others want me or expect me to live. I am very excited about this coming year 2016!

??? What about you? What are you living for? Who “leads” your life???

Do you know your strengths?

life coaching, coaching, colouryourdream,city,photography,strengths,purpose,life

Do you know what your strengths are? How can you discover them? You can find a lot of different websites about how to find out what your strengths are – and some are helpful. But: you also know it yourself what you are good at and how specific activities make you feel: do they energize you or drain you?

What is a strength?

I found a good explanation in this book: „Go put your strengths to work, 6 powerful steps to achieve outstanding performance“ Marcus Buckingham.“

Here I am going to summarize from Page 90:

What does a strength look like?

  • It looks like consistent, near-perfect performance

Which three ingredients combine to create a strength?

  • 1. Talents: Because you are so close to your own talents, they are most effectively measured by personality profiles such as the Clifton StrengthsFinder, Myers-Briggs, and the Kolbe Conative Index. Talents are innate.
  • 2. Skills: Skills are learned.
  • 3. Knowledge: Knowledge is learned.

What does one of your strengths actually feel like to you?

  • When you do it, you feel effective – the S of SIGN (if you read further I explain SIGN)
  • Before you do it, you actively look forward to it – the I of SIGN
  • While you are doing it, you feel inquisite and focused – the G of SIGN
  • After you’ve done it, you feel fulfilled and authentic – the N of SIGN.

If you want to identify your own strengths, „pay close attention to how specific activities make you feel. Your feelings reveal your strengths.“ (P.90)

You can look for signs. The book explains four signs of a strength.

I will summarize the four sings of a strengths (Page 76-116).

SIGNs (S= Success, I= Instinct, G= Growth, N= Needs)

You can pick a strength that you think you have, e.g. you are good at presenting a topic to a group of people, you empathize with people, you are good at communicating, etc.

Now rate on a scale from 1-5 if you agree or disagree to following statements (1= strongly disagree, 5= strongly agree)

S (= Sucess)

  1. I have been tremendously successful at this type of activity
  2. Other people often tell me I have a gift for this type of activity
  3. I have been given prizes or recognition for doing this type of activity

I (= Instict)

  1. I do this type of activity every day
  2. I often find myself volunteering for this type of activity
  3. This type of activity is a „gut reaction“ to me

G (= Growth)

  1. I pick up this type of activity quickly
  2. I find myself thinking about this type of acivity every day
  3. I can’t wait to learn new techniques for doing this activity

N (= Needs)

  1. I always look forward to doing this type of activity
  2. It’s fun for me to think back to when I was doing this type of activity
  3. Doing this type of activity is one of my greatest personal satisfactions

Scores:

53 and above: a true strength

46-52: it depends which questions brought down the score. If you rated the first 3 questions low, while the I, G, and N questions got high marks, it is a sign that this is indeed a strength but one that you have yet to apply affectively. Stay focused on this activity, discipline yourself to seek out the necessary skills and knowledge, keep practicing, and quite soon you should see your performance start to get attention.

If your answers to question 4 through twelve pulled down the score, then the chances are that it is not a strength. It lacks the urgency and the extreme positive reactions so characteristic of a strength.

46 and below: it is highly unlikely to be a strength.

??? What is one of your strengths??? What energizes you??? How did you discover that it is your strength? What do your closest friends say what your strengths are???

Your unique gift

Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.“

– Albert Einstein –

life coaching, life, coaching, gift, purpose, talent

How often do you compare yourself to someone else? How often do you say to yourself: “She/ he is so good in this. I wish I could do this too.“

Instead of thinking: „I can’t climb the tree“, you can shift your way of thinking and focus on your great ability to swim with no effort. Because someone who can climb the tree can’t swim like you without effort.

Do you compare yourself with others? What does this do with you?

Do you focus on your gifts, instead of looking envious to the person with other gifts? Do you wish you had other gifts?

What would happen, if you focused on on your gifts and used them?

You are a unique person and you have have gifts, nobody else has in this special combination like you have!

I am looking forward to hearing from you a responses to the following questions:

??? What are you good at? What energizes you? What do you love doing? When do you loose track of time (when doing what)???

Morning Story and Dilbert Vintage Dilbert
August 15, 1989

One young man went to apply for a managerial position in a big company. He passed the initial interview, and now would meet the director for the final interview.

The director discovered from his CV that the youth’s academic achievements were excellent. He asked, “Did you obtain any scholarships in school?” the youth answered “no.”

“Was it your father who paid for your school fees?”

“My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.” he replied.

“Where did your mother work?”

“My mother worked as a clothes cleaner.”

The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.

“Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?”

“Never…my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Besides, my mother can…

Core values

life coaching purpose dream goal colouryourdream values

As you run around struggling to check your daily „to dos“ off your list, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s really important –your core values. Take the time to check in with yourself. Take a sheet of paper and list your values and then ask yourself if you’ve done or said anything recently that you aren’t proud of. Before long you’ll find yourself thinking of the list before you act.“

??? Do you have any experiences with “To do lists” and your core values???
